Fender became the first electric guitar manufacturer heavily associated with the single-coil pickup due to the popularity of guitars like the Broadcaster, Telecaster and Stratocaster.Single-coil pickups were first realised by the likes of Rickenbacker and Gibson in the 1930s and became widespread with the widespread embrace of the electric guitar in the 1950s.Today, we’re getting stuck deep into the story of the development of the single-coil pickup over the years, as well as drawing the distinction between them and P-90s to find out exactly what it is that makes them sing. Since their introduction to the market in the early ’50s, single-coil pickups have retained their status as one of the most popular and malleable tools any electric player can have in their bag of tricks. What I’m saying is, be experimental and try the different pickups, but you’ll all agree that the filtertron looks the best.Words by Lewis Noke-Edwards From the Broadcaster to the Jaguar, explore the development of the popular pickup. For an example, i may be playing a riff on my jag but i then decide to play it on my strat and it can give it a total different sound and take it in a different direction. I have found that even though i have my jag, i still like to play my other guitars to find new tones and use them as a source of inspiration for when i come to right songs. When looking at guitars and pickups, i see how many tones i can get out with it through my pedalboard and the more, the better. I have always been in love with the Stratocaster sound as it was so unique and this was way I transformed my own. No matter when pedals the guitars are going through, they are easily recognizable. These pickups have created the famous tones for these guitars. They are famously used in many fender guitars, mainly being the Stratocaster and telecaster. Fender SIngle Coil PickupsĪs well as the humbuckers, the single coils are another widely used pickup. I have used these in my Jazzmaster and I love them just as much as my filtertrons. They are a lot brighter than the humbucker but not as bright and thin as the fender single coils. These are a take on single coil pickups first produced by Gibson. This was all i was going on when i purchased them for £200 but when they installed, they were worth every single penny. I have these in my Fender Jaguar guitar as the stock humbuckers that came with it were too dark, and these pickups looked ace. They were created as gretchs own humbuckers. These pickups work just like Humbuckers, but they are alot brighter.

Humbuckers are well known for being used for many Gibson guitars, most noticeably bein the Gibson Les Paul. This pickup can come in various looks with different names but the design is all the same. The name comes as it uses two coils to “buck” the “hum” that is picked up by the coil pickups. When the strings vibrate this induces an electrical current in the coils. Pickups work as the contain a magnet and produce a magnetic field. I’ll explain whats different about each one and give my take on the pickup itself. As you will guess, this post is all about the little box that helps us guitarist be heard.
